About This Book
When four ruthless outlaws descend on Paris, Texas, robbing the bank and snatching a local woman as a hostage, it falls to Perley Gates to ride after them. Armed with little more than grit and the company of his friend Possum, Perley tracks the gang toward the Red River and Indian Territory, where most men would turn back. After a partial rescue goes sideways and he kills the gang leader's brother, the pursuit becomes personal on both sides. Now three killers want blood, and Perley has to outrun their vengeance while keeping Becky Morris alive.
The dramatized adaptation format transforms this fifth Perley Gates entry into something closer to a radio thriller than a traditional audiobook. A large ensemble cast brings distinct voices to every character, while layered sound design and a propulsive score keep the tension moving at a steady clip. The format suits the material well: Johnstone's punchy, action-forward writing translates cleanly into scenes that benefit from multiple voices trading lines rather than a single narrator carrying the load.
