About This Book
A series of thefts at a London student hostel seems beneath Hercule Poirot's attention until the strange pattern of the stolen items — and the character of the thief — suggests something more sinister than simple kleptomania. Christie constructs the novel around a single residential community, using the compressed setting to build pressure until a murder makes the stakes unavoidable. The academic environment gives her ample opportunity for social comedy alongside the darkness.
Hugh Fraser, Captain Hastings in the long-running television series, narrates with an intimacy that suits the cozy-domestic scale of the novel. His voice carries the warmth of someone thoroughly at home in Christie's world, and his Poirot — rendered from the outside, through Hastings's admiring perspective — benefits from Fraser's affection for the material. At just over six hours, this is a well-paced afternoon's listening.
