The third Flesh and Fire novel picks up in the aftermath of a devastating betrayal, with Sera and her lover Nyktos both imprisoned by Kolis, the false king of the gods. Armentrout builds an oppressively tense court of the divine as Sera must survive Kolis's erratic cruelty long enough to find a way to free Nyktos, while revelations about the true nature of the realms and her own destiny accumulate toward a cataclysmic Ascension.

Stina Nielsen has narrated the series throughout and brings a precise calibration to Sera's emotional arc, moving from the fierce survival of the earlier books toward something more layered as the mythology deepens. The novel's considerable length, nearly twenty-four hours, is managed through Nielsen's ability to find variety in the long dungeon sequences and to make the supernatural court feel genuinely dangerous rather than decorative.
